Digital Reconstruction : Error

A computer is a limited and limiting device. We pour so much of our lives into a digital space and draw so much of our dreams and inspiration out of them that the digital world we occupy has become fully as important as the physical one. However, in reality the computer’s digital display is only an apocryphal representation of the tangible world. The language of the digital display is one of harsh square pixels and unnaturally bright backlit colors, the direct opposite of the organic surfaces and reflected light we encounter in the real world. A digital display relies entirely on visual trickery manipulating the structure of our eyes to achieve value and tone, constantly stimulating our visual senses beyond what they would encounter in nature. A computer is also terribly limited in its ability to generate meaningful or useful information from the content fed into it by a user. The old adage of a machine only being as smart as the person using it holds truer now than it ever has in human history, but we as a culture have imbued computers with near mythical power as creators and propagators of meaning. I do not fear this, nor am I concerned for the loss of traditional media as we transition into a digitally based culture, as I have wholly embraced it myself, but the limits of the integrity of the information must be explored.
